COMMUNITY INVITED TO DEVELOP VISION FOR SNEINTON AREA
11/1/2008

PEOPLE in Nottingham are being asked to take along old photographs of Sneinton Market and give their views at a public consultation on 12 January on how the area should look in the future.

The consultations will take place at the Sneinton Market units between 10am and 4pm. It’s an open invitation to people across Nottingham who are interested in the Sneinton Market and the Eastside Gateway Neighbourhood Plan.

The gathering is one of many public consultation events which will help form the Neighbourhood Development Plan for the area which includes Sneinton Market, Lower Parliament Street bus depot sites, Brook Street and Victoria Park. The plan – which will take a fresh look at the area - will also take in the area east of the city centre between Carlton Road and Stonebridge Road.

The initiative has come from Nottingham Regeneration Limited (NRL) and Nottingham City Council. Together the partners have commissioned the Neighbourhood Development Plan providing a framework for the regeneration of the area for the next ten to 15 years.

“We hope that the event will allow people to express their thoughts on how to take the area forward whilst also capturing people's memories of how it used to be and provide an opportunity for people to meet members of the team,” says Louise Seymour, principal project officer at NRL.

“On the day we will be providing refreshments and look forward to sharing tea and biscuits with anyone interested in the project. We are particular interested in meeting people who live or work close to the market.”

On Saturday, a professional photographer will also be taking a number of groups of young people out with cameras to explore their environment using photography. At the end of the sessions the work will be uploaded and incorporated into an exhibition and a small booklet will be put together future capturing the best of this photography.

Consultations within the community have already taken place and there is also an on line survey which NRL and consultancy firm ARC4 are together co-ordinating. The link for this is  www.sneintonmarketandeastsidegateway.info.

So far the consultation events have included a “walkabout” with residents from Stonebridge Park, a presentation at the Sneinton Business Forum Christmas party and  a design session with the Sneinton Alchemy Spaces and Places Action Group

Jon Silver of ARC4, the consultancy firm working with Gehl Architects which is putting the development plan together, said: “'We are looking forward to the event on 12 January when we have an opportunity to meet even more people who are passionate about improving Sneinton Market and Eastside Gateway. The early research work we have done has given us some great insights into how the market use to be and the ideas and aspirations people have for the future. We've had some great ideas from community members and business owners and have been made to feel really welcome in this part of Nottingham.”

A series of consultation events will take place as the work progresses in January, February and April.

“The study will identify sites which have the potential to have a huge impact on the area in terms of regeneration, through appropriate redevelopment and introduction of new uses,” said Louise.

The main purpose of the study is to develop a vision for the area and to ensure that there is a strategy for change.

Coun Alan Clark, portfolio holder for neighbourhood regeneration,
Nottingham City Council, said:  "The regeneration of Sneinton, one of
the main arterial roads in the city, will have a huge impact on
Nottingham and will help to move the city forward.

"Residents’ views on how the area should look will be key in the decision-making process and we welcome them to come forward with their views."

"Nottingham City Council is pleased to be sharing this project with
Nottingham Regeneration Limited."
